Holy Resurrection and Holy Trinity cathedrals
At the end of the XVII century Ostashkov turned into a big city, which grew rapidly in the population, developing trade. The proximity to the Lithuanian border, and the constant danger of attack in no way hindered the growth of the city. Ostashkov actively traded with other cities, with Poland and Lithuania. In 1651 the voivode of Ostashkov announced what in the town are going to come traders from Smolensk, Mogilev and other. In many cities of Russia in the second half of the XVII century, the development of trade and the construction going on in parallel. The division into two Ostashkov settlement was also a purely local causes, which contributed to the revival of construction. And the patriarch and the Joseph and Hilarion Monastery in the city councils appoint their superiors, who implement an well-defined tastes. The combination of these factors contributed to the fact that in the Monastic settlement in 1677 began to build the Holy Resurrection cathedral - one of the largest in the Tver region. At the same time next to the cathedral bell tower was built. Following this, for the inhabitants of Patriarchal settlements near the Holy Resurrection cathedral in 1685 laid the Holy Trinity cathedral, consecrated in 1697. (In the middle of the XVIII century when it was erected as a freestanding bell tower.) Two stone church, built about the same time, in such a relatively small city like Ostashkov - an exclusive event. Note that in Tver there was an only one city council, in Rzhev only at the end of the XVII century began to build a stone church, and in Zubtsov he was generally remained wooden.
The Holy Resurrection cathedral and Holy Trinity cathedral was rebuilt several times, changing their appearance, painted the interior and repaired. About the original shape of the сouncils recently can be judged only by small fragments of decoration that can be seen on the facades. The rest of the XVII century ornament was hidden later additions, with a thick layer of plaster, were shot down or replaced at different times of the new decor. Restoration of the Holy Trinity cathedral is finished and the day is near when Holy Resurrection cathedral facades will be free from scaffolding. In the process of restoration architect VI Yakubeni have made many interesting observations and discoveries. Until recently, standing next to a tall pillar-like bell tower with a hipped end nearby Holy Resurrection cathedral of its forms caused some confusion. ts composition and the decor is repeated well-known Yaroslavl's bell towers. The direct analogy for it can serve as the belfry of the cathedral complex in Korovniki in Yaroslavl, which has almost the same composition and color treatment of the tent with decreasing openings auditory windows. It is now obvious that the Holy Resurrection and the Holy Trinity cathedrals - the first stone buildings in Ostashkov - on stylistic grounds belong to the Yaroslavl's school of architecture. At the Holy Resurrection Cathedral the quadrangle of church without pillars with a refectory and church aisles from the north to the south crowned with two rows of corbel arches and traditional five cupolas. Pedestals at the base is also decorated with kokoshniki. The composition and especially the decoration of the facades are characteristic of many townspeople Yaroslavl churches, until the individual details of decor which are found only there. The reasons why people refer to the building traditions of Yaroslavl are not entirely clear. One can only conclude that the extant temples of Ostashkov consistently repeat his own prototype. Magnificent Yaroslavl's cathedrals erected by wealthy merchants who relished Ostashkov residents, as evidenced by the further development of construction in the city and surrounding area.
In the second half of XVIII century, after a repair, Holy Trinity cathedral was painted and decorated with stucco, made, apparently by masters Kondraty Semenov Konyagin, Ilya Mikhailov Verzin and Semen (Eremeev?) Utkin. These masters were working on interior decoration of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Peter'n'Paul cathedral in the Nilov monastery. (Above the disclosure of paintings are now working artists association "Rosrestavratsiya.") According restored fragments of Doomsday's compositions, figures and saints faces, signature of Hole Resurrection cathedral will be an interesting monument of pictorial art, performed by local masters.
For its size and composition of Holy Trinity cathedral is not very different from the Holy Resurrection cathedral. However, the church's quadrangle received a more slender proportions, and the decor became more elegant. This reflected further changes in Russian architecture, the growth of its "jewels". The greatest changes have been the completion of the cathedral and the traditional five cupolas. The dome drums are a little narrower, more densely placed to each other. Kokoshniki on the corners with fractures of the quadrangle, so that the angles are decorated two facades at once. A similar device placement of kokoshniks somewhat earlier widely used in the churches of Moscow, Zamoskovie, was picked up very quickly and loved by artists of Yaroslavl, repeated in Ostashkov at Holy Trinity cathedral, and later - in Toropets. A clear plane of the upper part of the facade of the building, previously addressed frontally to the viewer was broken. Kokoshniki become not a continuation of the facade but turned as if in a developed pedestal for five domes, continuous belt around the perimeter of the building. Hence, there was only one step before the masters when trying to make the ancient forms of the new "baroque sound", turn kokoshniki in decorative belt, combined with the classic forms of moldings, such as in the Rogozha village's church.
It is difficult to find any fundamental differences between cathedrals of Ostashkov and Yaroslavl. The greatest discrepancy between them - the complete absence of the famous Yaroslavl colored glazed ceramics and its replacement by a simpler decoration of brick and white stone. But with all this, especially in the Holy Trinity cathedral, begins to produce features that are unique to the local construction. For example, there are steps with original pillars and richly decorated brick shaped "cutting" to intercept half-columns and beads and become thinner buried in the walls of the array "of clubs" niches, etc. Subsequently, all these forms will be widely used in the local architecture and will survive until the beginning of the XIX century.

The Holy Trinity cathedral, as well as the Holy Resurrection cathedral, was painted in the second half of XVIII century by local painters. In contrast to the bright colors of paint murals of Holy Resurrection cathedral, where the faces of the characters as if written off to the masters of the people around them, and holy holiday dressy attire, painting in the Holy Trinity Cathedral is more restrained, dusky brownish-ocher color, which seemed snatched the bright light of the individual figures. Pictorial compositions in rich baroque stucco frame performed by local craftsmen. The presence of a rich stucco decoration in the Holy Trinity and the Holy Resurrection cathedrals and other churches in the area of the city shows Ostashkov work in a long time, highly skilled modelers. This is confirmed by numerous archival documents, as well as the fact that Ostashkov.koe modelers were known far beyond the city. Now part of the exhibition moved to the Holy Trinity cathedral, Museum of local lore.
Somewhat apart among a group of buildings stands the bell tower of the Hole Trinity cathedral. It is interesting to compare it with another that stands beside him and was built seventy years before. Two times, two totally different style, a completely different understanding of the forms. The bell tower of Yaroslavl masters rose rapidly up smooth like elastic pillar, contracted with pilasters, proudly carrying a magnificent tent. Shrinking up auditory openings with architraves round off a great harmony. There is something solemn in the composition of the bell tower, regal in his irresistible rise. The second tower slightly above the first, but its outline is less strict and not so clearly drawn in the sky. Rounded shape with soft smooth contours. Moreover, each layer separated stressed from each other. Decorative forms one of the tiers of the bell tower reminiscent of the detailed hanging scrolls.Drawing these "scrolls" its expressiveness actively influences the plane of the wall, according to her dynamism, when you look at them, especially you know how impatient was the master of the plane as it tried to break the static nature, give it a movement, make it a multi-faceted.
Two of the cathedral and bell tower, built in the late XVII century in Ostashkov, their rich decoration, appears to be particularly applauded by residents of the city, long served as "show-piece" for local artists. How else to explain that from one hundred to one hundred and fifty years in churches in the surrounding villages will be repeated decorative motifs firstborn stone architecture of the region. By this time the churches do not just change, give them a new look, trying to assimilate their capital models, will not be elegant facades, but they are not erased from the memory of those who adorned the "white vestments of churches" around the village Ostashkov. And it is unlikely we have underestimated these monuments, in which a half century later, as if escaping from under the cover of the centuries, suddenly revived forms, it would seem entirely gone.
